Finest Collections: Party Tricks

All cards on the table: August bank holiday is the best weekend of the year, largely thanks to Notting Hill Carnival. Two million people spill into West London’s streets, throw on their sequins, crank up the bass, and invite the city to soak in the inimitable vibes. Since 1966, Carnival has been a landmark celebration of Caribbean culture and today it is as much a part of London’s identity as the Tube map or the skyline.

Whether you want to be first in the samba line or the one sipping something sophisticated while watching the procession from a respectful distance, London’s homes offer a stage perfectly suited to your party persona.

The Quick Change Artist

They roll out of bed to the starting line for a shimmy. And when they’ve worn themselves out following the mas parade its back to de-glitter, rehydrate and enjoy some jerk chicken in their jim jams.

How they host:

Low-key gatherings in the kitchen, where they trial their elderflower-wine concoctions on you and serve barely enough lentil crisps and matcha nuts before conceding that you should have just gone out instead.

Don’t ask about bathroom access during Carnival, even they won’t be around to let you in.

The ‘Pass the Aux’

They don’t just attend Carnival, they plan their month around it. They’re the kind who always brings a pre-mixed set on a USB, debates early boiler room sets, and insists that bass hits better on vinyl.

How they host: Think crates doubling as side tables, a vintage sound system, mezcal poured without ceremony. Guests drift between the sofa and the vinyl collection while snacking on charcuterie boards that look like art. Low-lit, good tunes, and even better company.

Chevening Road, Queens Park NW6 – 20 min cycle

The Host with the Most (Taste)

They claim they’re “just dropping by,” but have their outfit steamed the night before. Always seen mid-laugh, cocktail in hand, like they’re starring in a very stylish documentary.

How they host: Ottolenghi bits on platters, fairy lights strung with architectural precision, and a guest list that’s one part old friends, one part neighbour’s kids who caught wind of a game of sardines with all your little ones… and of course, the focaccia’s home made.

Cavendish Rd, Brondesbury, London, NW6 – 20 min cycle 30 min tube

The Detailist

Knows where to get the best burrata. Plans a pre-Carnival picnic. Wears linen like armour and always remembers who’s gluten-free.

How they host: They say “come as you are,” but the roof terrace is dressed better than you are, the chairs are labelled and the whole place smells like a Diptyque flagship.

8 Radipole Road, Fulham (Radstock) – 24 min cycle/20 min tube

3 Bedrooms | 3 Bathrooms | 1 Reception Rooms
Guide Price £1,400,000
For Sale with Garrison Estates London

The Observer

They’re not in the thick of it, but they know exactly what’s going on. Plans a knees up on the regular, makes sure to wear their jazziest shirt on Carnival day. Drinks too many cocktails, gets chatty with a house-owner offering their toilet to party-goers and ends up staying there for a few hours. Falls asleep on the tube back home and ends up all the way in Stratford before they realise what’s happened.

How they host: 14th-floor soirée with everything served ‘on the rocks.’ Conversation turns to IPOs, whether avocado toast is a deductible expense, and someone insisting the joke of the century is calling their crostini consumption ‘capital grains.’

Douglas Tower, Canary Wharf, Goodluck Hope, London, E14 – 30 min tube

2 Bedrooms | 2 Bathrooms | 2 Reception Rooms
Guide Price £880,000

The Balancing Act

Holding the pace of the parade fueled by their morning matcha and enough friends to start a run club, this carnival-goer is here to absorb the atmosphere from every angle and stay long after the last float.

How they host:

Always says they’re “sitting this one out” and somehow ends up hosting. They’ll squeeze in a training run, two brunches, and a soundcheck before you arrive. Owns a Nutribullet and a wine fridge: uses both regularly.

103 Sugden Road, London SW11 – 48min public transport/30 min cycle

The Style Maven

Has breakfast in a vintage kimono, and breakfast usually consists of jam on toast before heading for brunch cocktails with the girls on Saturday morning before purveying a new exhibition at the Institute of Contemporary Arts, albeit a little tipsy. Will travel to Columbia Road for decadent flowers, but is also a virtuoso in the art of staying home with nibbles and a movie.

How they host:

Wine on tap, coffee table books open and discussions in full swing. No topic is off the table. Cranks the sash window so the London air can circulate the discussion. Orders in sourdough pizzas because cooking just gets in the way of the conversation.

Willesden Lane, Kilburn, London, NW635 min cycle

1 Bedrooms | 1 Bathrooms | 1 Reception Rooms
Guide Price £400,000

The ‘Back in My Day’

Old-school energy, West London polish. They’ve been doing Carnival since before your favourite DJ had decks, now they do it in Tod’s loafers and with a chilled bottle of Picpoul in tow. They’ll tell you which sound systems are worth your steps, then guide you home in time for a Negroni and a cold compress.

How they host:

Their hosting style is as timeless as the cornicing, fresh flowers on the table, classics through the Sonos, and a soft-close drawer full of silverware that only comes out for “proper occasions.” You’ll leave convinced you need a decanter and a husband who can carve.

21 Harbledown Road, London, SW6

Guide Price £2,250,000

So, in the end it doesn’t really matter where in London you hail from. Notting Hill Carnival has always been a wonderful, colourful celebration of the fusion of cultures, so no matter the miles it takes to get you there, you always feel welcome.
