A Moment in Time : John and Joanne talk about their time occupying a slice of Kelloe Hall South’s history

From the moment we sat down with Jo and John to talk about Kelloe Hall South, it was clear how much this house meant to them. The admiration, not only for its character but for the life they’ve built within its walls, was self-evident as they shared its history. From medieval roots to Georgian additions, and a setting that feels both private and connected, Kelloe Hall has been a place of celebration, reflection, and every day joy. As they prepare to pass it on, they share what has made this house so special for them, and what future owners have to look forward to.

What initially attracted you to this property?

“When we first arrived at Kelloe Hall, we were drawn in by the house itself and it’s history,” Jo explained.
“It’s tucked away in the countryside, but getting into Durham or Darlington is a breeze. It gave us a sense of seclusion, but we’ve not had to compromise on convenience.”

While its location was an obvious draw, it was the heart of the home that was its biggest draw. “The house’s history truly captivated us: the footprint of the house is medieval, while the current structure dates back to around 1700. We later discovered that Richard de Kellaw, one of the Prince Bishops, may have lived here. And there are records suggesting it was used as a courtroom after the Civil War. The house has witnessed so much history, and here we are, occupying some of it!”

Can you share a memorable experience or story that took place here?

Most happy homes have stand-out memories. For Jo and John, Kelloe Hall was about those closest to them, like all who call a house a home. “The house and gardens have been the perfect backdrop for countless memorable moments,” Jo shared. “Over the years, we’ve hosted birthdays, charity events, and family gatherings. It’s the perfect hosting house, with lots of room for our family and friends. During nice weather we open the conservatory doors so people can flow in and out of the garden, its wonderful.”

What unique features of the home do you love the most?

“The house is full of surprises,” Jo said with a smile. “The exterior is a little deceptive; it’s much bigger than it looks. You can really feel the house’s history in the way the decor has evolved over time.” At this point Jo took us to see the light-filled hallway, with its original floors and imposing staircase. “We absolutely love it, it’s crowned by a stunning sash window that frames the most spectacular sunsets that sometimes feel like they’re just for us. Who else is seeing this exact view? We’re fortunate enough to experience these views every evening. It’s moments like these that make this house truly special.”

Have you made any significant changes or renovations? What inspired them?

While a lot of folk might see in a period property the opportunity to strip away and modernise, it was the opposite for the custodians of this gentle home, and we’re grateful for it. “We’ve taken great care to preserve the house’s original character while making it fit for us,” John explained as he walked us through the house. “We restored many of the original wooden floors, and we updated the bathroom to make it more practical. Each decision was driven by a desire to respect the house’s past while ensuring it suits the way we live today.”

How would you describe the atmosphere and environment of this home?

“The atmosphere here is peaceful yet full of life,” Jo shared. “It’s quiet, but there’s always something to do. The countryside surrounding this house is perfect for walks and cycling, and it’s easy to step outside and connect with nature. At the same time, everything you need is within reach. There’s a real sense of balance here, a place to retreat, yet we’re still very much connected to the world.”

What do you think future owners will appreciate most about this property?

“We’ve no doubt the future owners will fall in love with the house’s character, the space, and the stunning views,” John said thoughtfully. “It’s a house that gives you room to breathe, but it also feels welcoming. Four bedrooms and three living areas gives you a lot of flexibility, which is something I think people look for more and more these days. The location, so quiet and still, yet so close to everything, is something we’ve truly valued, and that is something in recent years we’ve heard people really long for. The property offers beautiful character yet complete comfort. You just don’t find that every day.”

Jo added, “For us, this house has been a place of discovery. We’ve had so many wonderful moments here, and we know the next owners will make their own special memories. It’s a house that invites you in, gives you the space to create your own story, but will evolve with you, as period properties tend to do.”

How do you feel about passing it on to someone new?

“As we prepare to pass Kelloe Hall on, we do so with sense of gratitude,” Jo reflected. “It’s been a wonderful chapter for us, and we’re excited for the new owners to experience everything we’ve cherished. It’s a home that gives you so much, space, beauty, and memories. We know that whoever steps into this house next will be just as moved by it as we were.”
