Finest Collections: Artful Interiors Inspired by Turner and Constable

From 27th November 2025 to 12th April 2026, Tate Britain will present a major exhibition dedicated to the works of two of Britain’s most celebrated painters, J.M.W. Turner and John Constable, in honour of the 250th anniversary of their births. The landmark exhibition will bring together an extraordinary selection of paintings, sketches, and other works, offering visitors a rare opportunity to explore the artistic dialogue between two of the most celebrated figures of British art. Spanning the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, the exhibition will trace how Turner and Constable revolutionised landscape painting, transforming it from a humble genre into a powerful form of expressive art.

To mark the occasion, we’ve curated a selection of homes perfectly suited to display a Turner seascape or a Constable landscape. From the rugged shores of Scotland to the rolling hills of Devon, each property offers spaces where such masterpieces would truly come to life…

The Hop Kilns, Avenbury Court, Avenbury, Bromyard, Herefordshire

Starting off strong we have The Hop Kilns, a Grade II Listed (you guessed it) former hop kiln situated in the stunning Frome Valley. Boasting three acres of gardens, orchards, a productive vineyard and a football pitch, this property is as self-sustaining as they come. Arguably though, the pièce de résistance of The Hop Kilns is its vast art spaces. Forget the generic 75-inch plasma TV and grey crushed velvet sofa combo – this family room is a riot of sketches, framed photographs, and enough colour to rival Turner’s The Burning of the Houses of Lords and Commons, 16th October 1834.

It doesn’t end there though, colour and art weave their way through the rest of the home: think stained glass lamp shades, a royal blue staircase, and a plethora of Persian rugs. The new owners have a lot to live up to. JK.

The Ballroom, Coodham House, Symington, Ayrshire

Once a palace of pirouettes and glittering gowns, The Ballroom has traded dancers for a new kind of performance: art.

The glitz and glamour remain, but the choreography now comes from brushstrokes instead of ballroom steps. Where feet once twirled, canvases now command the spotlight. Realist, expressionist, and impressionist works line the walls, yet you can almost feel the room whispering for a Turner. His work captures movement as something transient and luminous, the same kind of motion that once swept across this floor. It’s easy to imagine a ceilidh or waltz turning in slow circles, echoing the rhythm of his brushstrokes.

The Mill House, Sebergham, Carlisle, Cumbria

We like to think of The Mill House as the sort of place Turner and Constable might’ve squabbled over for easel space, should they have made the journey way up north. Turner would have chased the light on the millstream, while Constable busied himself with the clouds (and perhaps complained about the weather).

Set in the peaceful Cumbrian countryside, this Grade II Listed former water corn mill has been lovingly restored over fifty years by a retired architect and garden designer. It’s got all the painterly details: exposed oak beams, honest stone walls, and a water wheel that still earns its keep. The gardens are an impressionist’s daydream – wildflowers, orchards, and a potager straight out of Gardening Etc. And, should inspiration strike, the converted studio out back is ready for the next great British landscape artist… or at least someone with a half decent set of watercolours.

Blaen Nant Melyn, Rhandirmwyn, Llandovery, Carmarthenshire

Blaen Nant Melyn is the house that has it all: not only is it situated in a picture-perfect, Constable approved location (we’re sure), but it also serves as a cosy artist retreat, the current owner housing their easel in the snug – should inspiration strike. Picture this: snow falling, the occasional crackle of the fire, and you, paintbrush in hand, chasing the perfect shade of “Welsh mist” before evening creeps in.

Tucked deep within the Towy Valley, the surrounding views are so spectacular that it’s as if the landscape itself has taken art direction from the greats. Fair warning to the next owner though, you might get a muse (or two) rock up at your door…

Curlew Court, Sutton Bridge on the Lincolnshire/Norfolk Border

Curlew Court feels like it was designed with one goal in mind: to make artists swoon. Bathed in natural light, wrapped in warm wood, and framed by greenery, it’s hardly surprising that the current owners claimed the mezzanine as an art studio. Vaulted ceilings, exposed beams, and generous roof lanterns pour daylight across the space, perfect for chasing those subtle shifts in colour and shadow – the sort of ephemeral magic Turner made his trademark.

Step beyond the studio, and the house itself seems to have a painter’s eye. Open-plan kitchens and living areas spill light everywhere, while bi-fold doors open onto gardens that could double as a Constable landscape. Cosy snugs, quiet corners, and a galleried landing offer little respites for thought… or for plotting your next masterpiece.

Coatham Hall, Coatham Mundeville, Darlington, County Durham

Hidden behind grand stone walls and mature trees, Coatham Hall is a Grade II Listed Georgian beauty that marries timeless elegance with modern edge. Step inside and the past greets you warmly: lofty sash windows pour light onto original floorboards, deep cornices cast gentle shadows, and marble fireplaces hint at centuries of conversation (and perhaps one last brandy before the embers fade).

Bringing this stately home effortlessly into the twenty-first century is its vibrant collection of contemporary prints and paintings, many born in the large upstairs studio, where creativity and colour flow as freely as the light through those generous windows. Much like a Constable landscape come to life, Coatham Hall is no ordinary country house. It commands attention, tells its own story, and does so with the quiet confidence of a place that has seen generations come and go. An old soul, yes – but one that proves heritage and modernity can dance together beautifully. And truth be told, it looks damn good doing so.

Flag Cottage, Dartmouth, Devon

Who says we can’t use our landings as makeshift art galleries? Certainly not Flag Cottage.

Tucked away in the peaceful hamlet of Cistern Meadow, with views over the rolling Devonshire countryside down to the River Dart, this four-bedroom coastal cottage has been thoughtfully designed with all the colour and personality you could wish for. Think stained glass windows, a kitchen finished in Farrow & Ball, bespoke Rapture & Wright fabrics, and a plethora of paintings adorning each room. Even the landing refuses to be overlooked – its teal walls now host a mini salon of landscapes and abstracts, a space where Turner might have approved of the light and Constable would have nodded at the pastoral tones. Every inch has been perfectly curated, proving that even a corridor can hold its own as a conversation piece.

Sunny Mount, Cromer, Norfolk

Similar to Flag Cottage, Sunny Mount is an example of using art to complement and bring interest to an otherwise overlooked area of the home like the corridor. Much like the evocative, watercolour works of Turner, the current owners of Sunny Mount have injected each room with shades of pink, yellow, and green to make even the smallest nook and cranny feel truly alive.

The sitting room, with its rose-hued walls and buttercup-yellow fireplace, is less a timid pastel palette and more a full Turner sunset. Even Constable might have set aside his clouds and fields for a moment to admire the playful warmth and painterly layering that make this space sing.

So, what are you waiting for? Whether you’re an artist or an amateur, grab your apron, open your watercolours, and let your imagination run wild. Fill your home with art, your art, and let every wall tell a story as vibrant as the masterpieces of Turner and Constable.
