House of Tides: The Michelin-Star That Put Newcastle on the Map

Opened in February 2014 by celebrated chef Kenny Atkinson and his wife Abbie, House of Tides occupies a beautifully restored, Grade I Listed 16th-century merchant’s townhouse on Newcastle’s historic Quayside. The restaurant combines a relaxed, approachable atmosphere with high-quality fine dining, creating a space that feels welcoming and unpretentious without compromising on standards. Just one year after opening, this commitment earned House of Tides a Michelin Star in 2015 – a distinction it has proudly maintained for the past decade.

The dining room

Step into the rustic ground-floor bar and you immediately feel at home. With its original flagstones and exposed beams, the space is perfect for a pre-dinner aperitif, a quiet drink, or a lingering nightcap. Upstairs, the main dining room continues the building’s timeless charm, featuring open beams, a grand fireplace, and views overlooking the River Tyne.

Behind it All: Chef Patron Kenny Atkinson

Newcastle-born Kenny Atkinson has spent over twenty-nine years honing his craft and holds the distinction of being the city’s first chef to earn two separate Michelin stars – one at House of Tides and one at its sister restaurant, Solstice.

A Taste of House of Tides

House of Tides’ relaxed, informal approach to fine dining shines through in its menu. Expect comforting, indulgent plates like rosemary focaccia, potato and goat’s cheese terrine, Himalayan salt-aged beef, and a dark chocolate dessert with orange, cumin, and mascarpone to finish.

Below is a selection of photographs showcasing some of House of Tides’ standout dishes from earlier this year.
