"A simply gorgeous Lakeland cottage with elegant interiors and lovely gardens nestled within an idyllic hamlet"
The Property
The Millstream is a truly wonderful Lakeland cottage, bursting with character and charm, and nestled in one of the most beautiful locations imaginable. Dating from the 19th century, the property was originally a water-driven cotton mill in the tiny but much sought-after hamlet of Applethwaite. Restored and renovated with great care and attention, The Millstream now offers a gorgeous escape with spectacular walks from the doorstep, along with access to a host of outdoor activities and all of the amenities to be found in the nearby market town of Keswick. The property is currently configured as a highly successful holiday let cottage; the combination of elegant accommodation and magnificent surroundings has proved to be of tremendous appeal.
The Millstream is laid out over three floors, with the unusual layout guided by the property location on the gentle slopes at the base of Lakeland fells. The main entrance is from the parking area and garden. A lobby/boot room is perfect for muddy boots after a day exploring the local area. The sitting room with open fire sets the tone for the cottage, with a rustic and cosy atmosphere. The room is filled with natural light from a triple aspect. Also on this floor is a twin bedroom with a fun additional raised platform bed that kids will love.
An upper hall leads to a staircase to the middle floor and a galleried landing. The landing also provides a little nook to hideaway with a good book. There are two bedrooms on this floor. The principal bedroom benefits from a fitted wardrobe and an attractive window seat. The well-appointed en-suite shower room has a walk-in shower and a WC, with a wash hand basin within the main bedroom. The other bedroom also has a wash hand basin, and is served by the family bathroom. A panelled bath with shower over has lovely tiled surroundings, and the suite is completed by a wash hand basin and WC. From the landing, there is a door that leads outside to a small rear courtyard.
The lower floor has a delightful open flow that encompasses a fabulous kitchen/dining area and a comfortable, relaxing snug. The kitchen has a modern country style, with elegant bespoke cabinetry, solid oak worksurfaces and twin Belfast sink. There is both a grand traditional AGA and an adjacent electric hob with extractor over, along with a range of quality appliances. Limestone flagstones run underfoot, and pretty exposed beams cross the ceiling. There is plenty of room for a large dining table and chairs. The snug is illuminated by a tall window that reaches up into the soaring space created by the galleried landing above, and there is ample space for comfortable seating. The whole floor is a hub for entertaining, eating and chatting with family and friends. Tucked off the kitchen is a useful laundry/utility room with an adjoining WC.
The majority of the furniture may be available to purchase subject to separate negotiation. Interested parties may wish to secure a fully-stocked holiday let, ready to simply step through the door and enjoy.
Externally
Peaceful and well-maintained landscaped gardens provide The Millstream with a private haven. A gated entrance leads to a gravelled driveway parking area with space for two vehicles and a picnic area in one corner. An area of lawn gives way to terraced gardens set with flags of traditional Lakeland slate. Vibrant plantings bring colour and charm, whilst mature trees of various species offer shelter and privacy. The gardens are as beautiful and interesting as the cottage, and the whole property is a true idyll in the heart of the Lake District National Park.
