The Art in the Detail: A Closer Look at Decorative Living

From mid-century modern revival to warm, textured, lived-in spaces, interior design is moving decisively away from dull greige – and not a moment too soon.

Here at Finest, one style we can’t seem to get out of our heads is decorative living: an approach in which walls, furniture, upholstery, and everyday objects are transformed through artistic techniques. The result? Interiors made much more personal, enriched with texture, colour, and character.

See below to learn more about our favourite decorative living artists leading the movement.

Antoinette Poisson
From left to right: co-founders Vincent Farelly and Jean-Baptiste Martin

Co-founders and artistic directors of “À Paris chez Antoinette Poisson”, Vincent Farelly and Jean-Baptiste Martin are both heritage restorers specialising in wallpaper.

Since 2012, they have brought the “savoir-faire” of “papier dominot” back to life with the creation of La Maison “À Paris chez Antoinette Poisson”, name given in homage to the Marquise de Pompadour, born Jeanne-Antoinette Poisson, lover of arts and wallpaper, whose period of life corresponds to the golden age of the “papier dominoté”.

Friezes & Borders

Borders are making a big comeback in our homes, adding an elegant touch to moldings or wallpaper. Each roll is 12 meters long, sold in sets of 4 rolls, each 3 meters long and designed, printed paper by paper and colored in their Parisian workshop.

Bloomsbury Revisited
From left to right: co-founders Jane Howard and Jane McCall

Founded by long-time friends Jane Howard and Jane McCall in 2020, Bloomsbury Revisited was born out of a shared passion for Charleston Farmhouse. Once home to members of the Bloomsbury Group—a circle of 20th century artists, writers and free-thinkers who came together to imagine society differently—Charleston quickly became a living, breathing work of art. Every surface of the house was covered in eclectic paintings and artwork, a sort of reaction against the turmoil that defined wartime Britain.

Today, Jane and Jane endeavor to keep this spirit alive, hand painting lampshades, wallpapers and cushions in patterns inspired by the Bloomsbury Group.

Wallpaper

‘Sussex Oak Fairground’ | £3.00 – £145.00

Sussex Oak came to life as Jane McCall was experimenting with optical illusions in pattern. The almost concertina wave of a stripe popular in 30’s and 40’s designs comes across in this more traditional design available in six colourways.

‘Gallops’ | £3.00 – £145.00

Gallops is an homage to a wonderful but anonymous print discovered whilst staying at a fabulous old manoir in SW France. Juxtaposing the horses and riders, trees and fences was fun and the shapes lent themselves to a figures of eight composition.
